‘Avengers’ film line-up — eh

2009 July 27

So, according to Comic Book Movies, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Fiege dished on the line-up for the “Avengers” film: Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Nick Fury and possibly, Black Widow and the Hulk.

None of these characters are exactly a surprise. (Hello, all them have been or will be in movies in the next two years!) But the line-up sure doesn’t light my fanboy fire, either.

When we heard ScarJo had snagged the Black Widow role, the news was that it included “The Avengers.” Ditto for Samuel L. Jackson’s mind-boggling multi-picture deal with Marvel Studios for Nick Fury. My guess is Fury will be an Avengers figure-head, as he is in the ULTIMATE AVENGERS.

I know Marvel Studios, and of course many fans, have been excited about the Hulk being a part of the film version. I understand and respect the Big Green Guy was an original member for a very short time, but I’m not all that excited about seeing more of Edward Norton as the Hulk. Talk about yawn-inspiring …

Marvel, I’m begging you: Give us more to chew on with “The Avengers” than the team tackling the rampaging beast. One word: BO-ring. Instead, give us Ultron! He’s the ultimate Avengers baddie — always has been, always will be.

That would open up the possibility to see the Vision subplot, giving us more to the creation-turns-on-the-creator storyline. I’m aware that means including Dr. Henry Pym, but aside from Cap, what’s the Avengers without the volatile Pym? There’s no doubt his carousel of aliases and his tumultous, violent relationship with Janet Van Dyne have added quite a bit of zest to the team’s history.

I started out virtually yawning about the line-up. For the record, my all-time favorite line-up is Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Wasp, Yellowjacket, the Beast (forget the “X-Men” legal entanglements, we need Hank McCoy on-screen!), Vision, Scarlet Witch, Wonder Man and Hawkeye. That’s who I’d like to see on the big screen.

Avengers assemble, indeed!

What do you say, Marvel? Did the boss by chance forget a few names? — I can hope.

Keep these updates on him coming. Mr Norton is a powerful actor. A person I both respect and would like to meet. Can’t wait for his new movie. The original painting I purchased of him is stunning and will be hung on my wall forever! PS I bought it here: http://www.paintedicons.co.uk/e-edward-norton-c-37_97.html

Greg, I’ve been asked that a lot. And I can’t remember to be honest. I just liked how the font looks, especially against the white background.
